Natalie of Makeshift:
I LOVE MakeShift. For one year, Natalie is wearing ONLY items she made herself, including all underthings and accessories! She has a really streamlined yet inventive style...very Swedish-in a-good-way. (yellow clogs!)
I don't make everything I own, but I do feel that by making 90 percent of my clothes (tops, dresses & outerwear), I have freed myself from something. That something is a little nebulous, but related to things I used to hate about my body, ways in which I didn't feel like "everyone else." Now that I only rarely try to stuff myself into what "everyone else" is wearing, I just don't tend to compare myself to an imaginary ideal nearly as often. It's a lovely feeling.
I think someday I will try making shoes:
I have terrible feet - very high arches that would make me a great ballerina in an alternate universe. In this life, they plague me with shooting pains if I wear crappy shoes. I can usually remedy this problem with Birkenstocks or firm arch supports. Mary Wales Loomis has made all her own shoes for ages - and has published a very helpful/tempting web page on the subject!
I don't think I will have to make jeans if I keep being able to shop at Old Navy:
I love stretch jeans bought 2 sizes too big. Since I started sewing, I have also instituted a policy of wearing non-binding clothing whenever possible. My too-big Old Navy Rock Star stretch skinny jeans are a revelation. They slide right off me if I don't wear a belt, but otherwise, they are heaven for strolling, napping, or bike riding. Pajama jeans!!
I will probably have to start making my own bras out of neoprene padded carbon fiber forms:
Bras are another story. I have tried on thousands in my day (at least that's what it feels like). I have yet to find one that I like. I have yet to find one that doesn't hurt in some way. I suppose I should just break down and go to town shop.
There are also plenty of ladies out there who make socks and panties. I ain't got the patience for the little things.
I do, though, think that I should make an online gallery that documents every outfit in 1958s Auntie Mame starring Rosalind Russel. That may be the only thing that the internet is missing. Something it desperately needs.
As a footnote, New Dress a Day is also extremely rocking! Every day for one year, she is refashioning a thrift store item bought for $1 or less into a cute wearable item!
